The common assumption in science that the entire universe is only materialistic and all causes, explanations and derivations must be entirely naturalistic, and must never include anything spiritual or divine, is a position which is clearly unacceptable to the Christian faith. In recent years, Intelligent Design theory (ID) has appealed to many Christians as a scientific theory which supports Divine design and intervention in creation. According to this view, our recognition of design patterns in the physical and biological world, and the highly improbable likelihood for the generation of such precise and intricate designs by chance evokes the existence and work of a Designer and Creator God. Because of its ability to support the Genesis creation account, ID has gained popularity in Christian circles and is a movement which is being hotly debated in the United States.

　 In this lecture, however, Dr. Vinoth Ramachandra, who holds a Ph. D. in nuclear engineering from the University of London, and is currently the Secretary for Dialogue & Social Engagement for the International Fellowship of Evangelical Students, and a speaker on many University campuses and seminaries, challenges both Naturalism and ID. It is argued that totally naturalistic science is unacceptable since it is itself a religious belief. It shall further be argued that ID is bad science from both a scientific and theological point of view. This will be a highly evocative lecture and sharing, and should stimulate and challenge the conceptions and thinking of both Christians and non-Christians interested in science.
